The count of generations of winegrowers of the Ziantoni family is lost over time. Originating from the flourishing Roman hills of Marino, we have always made wine in our lives. In 1972, Ovidio Ziantoni moved from Lazio to the well-suited Tuscany, where he enriched his tradition of grower and transformer of white grapes, with the production of fantastic red grapes, which so distinguish our territory. From here began our adventure as San Luciano, a splendid property located on the gentle hills of Monte San Savino, in the fertile Val di Chiana. The generations are continuing to follow each other, still maintaining the same passion and philosophy.
Remaining tied to the tradition of Lazio, Ovidio also implants in Tuscany the white vines of his childhood: Trebbiano, Malvasia, Grechetto and Vermentino. As for red grapes, the choice can only fall on Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Time goes by, harvest after harvest and the grown-up sons Marco and Stefano decide to increase the area planted, buying a new plot and also planting international grape varieties, such as Chardonnay for whites and Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for reds. It was from this breath of youth that the first wine selections were born, which until now have given us so much satisfaction.
Our vineyards are located on the hills of Monte San Savino, at 330 meters above sea level, with a South-South-East exposure. The soil is very fertile with a medium clayey consistency and the area benefits from a humid climate in the cold and warm and dry season in the hot season. During the harvest, the grapes are immediately taken to the cellar for crushing, destemming and for the first passage in the press, to end up fermenting in steel casks at a controlled temperature.
Not all the grapes follow the same path, the selected part for the superior red wines is worked separately, choosing the best wood for the aging of the tannins of the single grapes in the barrique cellar, while, for the selection white wines , the winemaking will continue in the steel casks.
The next step is to assemble the wines from the various barrels together again in the steel tanks, waiting for the last step: bottle aging. This period plays a key role for the final result, because it’s a process that takes time and patience. The cellar, equipped with a complete bottling and packaging chain, allows us to follow the production step by step and complete it.
